Introduction

Lateral thinking transcends the NBE

Lateral thinking transcends the NBE
At the recent National Back Exchange conference in Hinckley Linet UK’s innovative lateral tilting bedframe the Latera Acute made a big impact amongst delegates. Showcasing creative ways to perform unusual and everyday moving and handling procedures the Latera Acute bedframe proved to be a big attraction for delegates keen to view the numerous ways in which its innovative lateral tilting could benefit them.

The Latera Acute has been shown to significantly ease the physical strain on nursing staff helping them perform routine nursing activities with the minimum of effort. The Latera Acute has also proven to benefit a range of situations such as:

· Patient mobilisation – including seated transfers and sit-to-stand assistance
· Teaching of breast feeding
· Alternating supine and prone positioning
· Ease of access to patient for sacral and wound dressing
· Log rolling
· Pressure area care

The benefits of the Latera Acute were further supported by a seminar presentation at the conference by Stephen Wanless, Senior Lecturer, Clinical Skills Dept., Birmingham City University. He presented sessions on a major topic called ‘Rolling a patient - A motion capture view of Posture and Positioning’.

Within his presentations Stephen Wanless highlighted his thoughts that technology can reshape motor skills learning so that individuals can learn from visualising their posture via a 3D avatar and learn through a simulated experience.

The delegates were able to view a multi sensory interaction demonstration of rolling a patient on a standard bedframe compared to a bed with a lateral tilt via an immersive environment which was created by a computer. Through this demonstration it was clearly shown that turning a patient using the Latera Acute bedframe significantly reduces the strain placed on nursing staff during moving and handling practises.

This presentation also clearly highlighted the benefits for the use of Virtual Reality/ Motion Capture in moving and handling education and training.
